Annotating your data is the process of labeling your files with metadata, so that users can find, understand, and reuse your data on the AD Knowledge Portal.
If you haven't already, follow the instructions at Step 3: Upload Data before proceeding.
Data Annotation Steps
1. Verify metadata templates are current
If you completed your individual, biospecimen, and assay metadata templates following the instruction provided in Assemble Metadata, verify that the template version you filled out matches the latest version available before submitting, since templates are subject to change as our data standards evolve.

2. Complete file annotation template
Once your data is uploaded, your data manager will provide you with a file annotation template, pre-filled with the filenames of the files you uploaded. Fill in the required fields for each file.
3. Fill in required values
For all templates, refer to the metadata dictionary for definitions and valid values for each field. If you don't see a value that fits your data, reach out to us through your Service Desk ticket ā we can work with you to add new value(s) where appropriate.
4. Submit completed templates
Upload your completed metadata templates (individual, biospecimen, assay, and file annotation) to your metadata staging folder, alongside your data. See How to Organize Data for more on where these belong.
Once uploaded, your data manager will review your metadata and follow up with you if any corrections are needed.
Once your metadata is submitted, your data manager will let you know how to proceed. See Step 5: Release Data.
